Billy’s Bakery: Best Cupcakes in NYC

Display case of billys bakery cupcakes in new york city.

Billy, how I love thee! Billy’s is my most favorite bakery in New York City. In fact, it’s the best bakery I’ve been to thus far on my travel journeys. Billy’s is located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and I used to go there all the time when I lived in New York City. They have recently opened a couple other locations within the city but the original Chelsea location is the best. The decor is adorably old fashioned and makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time to your grandmother’s grandmother’s kitchen. Try saying that twice.

I first learned of Billy’s Bakery while visiting another bakery in the city named Magnolia’s and someone commented they thought Billy’s had better cupcakes. Say whaaat? Someone has better cupcakes than the famous Magnolia’s I’m nomming on right now? I was skeptical because there is a line that wraps around the corner of people just waiting to order 1 cupcake from Magnolia’s whereas there is no line of people waiting to enter Billy’s. That being said, a large portion of what made Magnolia’s so well known comes from Sarah Jessica Parker ordering dozens in Sex and the City.

Oreo icebox cake and peanut butter pie are examples of Billys Bakery desserts.

Well, there’s only one way to find out. I made the 15 minute walk over to Billy’s to do the ultimate taste comparison. I ordered every single cupcake on their menu and I can say without reservation Billy’s has better cupcakes than Magnolias. But the fun doesn’t stop there folks. They have a large selection of other delectable treats including pies, cakes, brownies, and cookies. I ordered some peanut butter chocolate bar that I just wanted to smother all over my face. Then the ultimate experience came when I had their oreo ice box cake. Whoa. Like whoa. Billy’s you’ve raised the bar on my sugar fun fest meter. Thank you. Forever.
